How to Get More Use Out of Your Outdoor Space Year-Round
One of the things I love about living and working in the Bay of Plenty is the climate. We get genuinely good weather for a good chunk of the year (sometimes…), and yet I visit a lot of homes where the outdoor space sits empty for months at a time because it's not quite set up for anything other than a perfect summer's day. A few practical changes can make a real difference.
Shade and shelter change everything
A deck that's fully exposed to the midday sun in summer, or wide open to the southerly in winter, is an uncomfortable place to be. A well-positioned pergola, privacy screen, or shade sail can turn an unusable space into one you actually want to spend time in. I design and build these as part of most outdoor projects, and the difference they make is immediate.
Think about the evening, not just the afternoon
Outdoor lighting is one of those things that feels like a luxury until you have it, and then you can't imagine being without it. Good lighting extends the hours you use your outdoor space significantly, and it makes the whole area feel more inviting. It's also a relatively straightforward addition to a deck or paved area.
Make it easy to move between inside and out
Awkward access, a single narrow door, steps in the wrong place, no outdoor storage for cushions and gear makes people less likely to use an outdoor space, even when the weather is perfect. Getting the flow right between your indoor and outdoor living areas is worth thinking about carefully.
Low maintenance matters
If your outdoor space requires a lot of effort to keep looking good, you'll use it less. Choosing the right decking material, sealing surfaces properly, and designing for easy cleaning all contribute to a space that stays looking great without becoming a chore.
A veggie garden adds year-round reason to be outside
This might sound small, but I've built a lot of raised veggie gardens and planter boxes over the years, and the people who have them tell me it completely changes how often they're out there. Having a reason to be in the garden, even just to check on things, is more powerful than you'd think.
If your outdoor space isn't working as hard as it could be, get in touch. A conversation and a free quote costs nothing, and the difference a well-thought-out outdoor build makes to daily life is genuinely significant.
